Dental Assisting | Amy Baker

Amy Baker is Lead Instructor of the Dental Assisting Program at Centura College in Richmond. She has close to 20 years of work experience in the dental industry, where she discovered a passion for teaching.

At Centura College, Amy is devoted to her students, and works hard to advance their careers.

“My name is Amy Baker. I started off as a dental assistant and I worked in the field for close to 20 years.

I wasn’t really teaching in a classroom environment, but I was teaching doctors to work with a dental assistant. I developed a passion for it and sharing my knowledge of the field.

I work at Centura College. I am the lead instructor of the Dental Assisting program. It’s been great!

I’ve met tons of students. I feel like I’ve been able to improve their lives. I’ve learned just as much from them as I feel I’ve taught them.

When they call you and say, “Yes, I passed my board exam,” there’s just no greater feeling in the world.

Most of my students that want to work in the field, are now working in the field, and it’s through the help of our career services. We’ve got a lot of relationships with dentists and people in the community. And we’re able to place our students on jobs. They’re all excited because they can do more things with their life.

There are a ton of avenues, and I don’t think people really understand all the different directions. There’s specialty practices, sedation assistants, sterilization assistant, front desk, office management, marketing, insurance companies – they want someone who’s actually worked as a dental assistant.

There’s so many different paths that you can go. In the future, I’d like to hear of some of my students maybe doing dental sales.

I have one student – she would like to come back and teach at Centura. There’s a lot of differentiated instruction. We take advantage of trying to accommodate everyone’s learning style.

You have a staff that’s there that just wants to serve the student. And our doors are always open to our graduates.

We all work together just to see the success of the student.

My name is Amy Baker. I work at Centura College, and we connect communities and careers.”
