Robert Tanner Freeman was born in Washington DC in 1846 His parents were once slaves who bought their freedom in the 19th century.
His formerly enslaved parents took the surname “Freeman” upon gaining their independence As a child, Robert befriended one of the local white dentists in Washington DC and began working as his apprentice. Dr. Henry Bliss Noble, a local . Freeman began working as an apprentice to Dr. Noble and continued until he was a young adult. Dr. Noble encouraged young Robert to apply to dental colleges.

Freeman had a strong interest in the health professions, and he sought work as a dental assistant and clerk from Dr. Henry Bliss Noble. Noble owned an office on Pennsylvania Avenue in DC and Freeman’s own white dentist who tutored Robert and mentored him. Dr. Noble encouraged Freeman to think seriously about pursuing a dental career pointing out that, compared to any other profession, Freeman would be in a better position to help alleviate human suffering by serving the dental health needs of his fellow African-Americans. And not to mention, there were only a total of 120 African-American dentists in the entire country at the time.
