Mutibi Tebatso shares with delegates: The psychological impact of COVID-19 on Dental Assistants.

COVID-19 effects sprung on us unexpectedly and affected all of us one way on the other. We had to learn to adapt to the new norm without consent. Some it affected more than others especially psychologically.

As a dental assistant practicing supervised, we found ourselves having to adhere to COVID-19 national lockdown regulations, the respect the employer’s request to work as normal as we can, in the midst of a lot of fear, confusion, and less productivity at work. The reported unsure and fake news did not make it easier. On the other hand, your peers seem to have the most understanding employers and try their level best to adhere to the Tshwane University of Technology. In the end, what is important in these unsure times is one’s Mental Health stability. In this presentation, we take a look at workplace fears relating to COVID-19 that affects dental assistants psychologically and also interventions to assist elevate those fears.

Tebatso Mutibi, has for the past 6 years served on the Dental Assisting, Dental Therapy and Oral Hygiene Professional board of the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), and is the Chair of the Preliminary and Professional conduct committee of the Dental Assisting, Dental Therapy and Oral Hygiene. Tebatso is serving on the Education committee member of the board. From 2014 till 2020, Tebatso held the position of Junior Lecturer at the Tshwane University of Technology, co-ordinating the Dental Assisting Program. Currently she is the Practice manager for Dr MM Mutibi.

Elize Jacobs has been a Dental Assistant since 1987 and is an Internationally Certified Laughter Teacher, and is an energetic, positive & determined individual, who finds great joy in uplifting, teaching and motivating people. Her greatest strengths are to approach practical problems through finding solutions in a clear and logical way.
