Diana Haronis/Getty ImagesA Bay Location supermarket owner pled guilty last Wednesday to 2 counts of “ostentatious” cost gouging after authorities discovered that products in the store were increased by approximately 300%.
Rajvinder Singh, the 51- year-old owner of Pleasanton supermarket Asia Bazar, previously referred to as Apna Bazar, struck a plea deal with the Alameda County Superior Court– dismissing 7 of the 9 counts leveled versus him in Might.
” The law avoids organizations from profiteering throughout a declared state of emergency situation,” District Lawyer Nancy O’Malley stated in a declaration. “This case marks the very first effective prosecution in Alameda County for cost gouging in the time of the pandemic.”
According to the preliminary grievances submitted last May, a minimum of 9 necessary products were flagrantly increased in the matter of days. California law allows services to raise costs as much as 10 percent following a pronouncement or statement of emergency situation.
One product, priced at $2.99 simply 2 days prior to Gov. Gavin Newsom stated a state of emergency situation on March 4, 2020, cost $4.99 Days later on, it was raised to $7.
A produce product was increased from 49 cents a pound to $1.99, a 306 percent markup, within the weeks prior to and after Newsom’s statement.
Thai hot chilis, Maggi noodles, loose teabags, yellow onions and pomegranates were amongst the products noted as part of the rate gouging grievance.
The shop, one buyer declared, charged “whatever they desire” in the days following the state of emergency situation.

When Serge Babka, an inspector for the Alameda County District Lawyer’s Workplace, gotten in touch with Singh days after the extreme markups were revealed, Singh stated that he was “required to rely on other providers” to keep Apna Bazar equipped. He did not offer any proof for these claims.
Following that correspondence, Singh went radio quiet till he was charged in May in 2015.
Singh’s penalty following the plea arrangement is a $20,000 contribution to the Alameda County Neighborhood Food Bank. Agents from the food bank did not instantly react to an ask for remark from SFGATE.
