Scientists released a National Institutes of Health-backed study with thousands of college students to identify whether Moderna’s COVID vaccine can prevent asymptomatic spread of the infection.
Why it matters: The results of the trial might provide vaccinated people insight on how careful they truly need to be when in close contact with others.
What they’re saying: ” This is a concern of extreme significance,” Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Contagious Illness, said at a press instruction on Friday.
- ” But the dominating concern is when these individuals get contaminated, how typically is that? If they’re asymptomatic, how much infection do they have in their nose and do they transmit it to individuals who are their close contacts?” he included.
The state of play: The research study, which introduced Thursday, is searching for 12,000 college students to volunteer across 21 schools, including the University of Maryland, the University of North Carolina, Texas A&M and Indiana University.

- Half of the volunteers will be randomly picked to receive Moderna’s vaccine right now. The other half will get their shots in approximately 4 months.
- Scientist will track the trainees by having them swab their noses and position the specimen in bar-coded vials for collection. Blood samples will be taken to evaluate for antibodies and tracked through an app.
- Some trainee volunteers can make money nearly $1,000 to take part completely.
